These are the high tech weapons of Dark Age, they are rarely seen and strictly controlled by the authorities. The only exception to this are laser pistols. Laser pistols can be owned by the public, subject to a background check and weapons permit. From the criminal's point of view, lasers are excellent as they have no ballistic pattern as they do not fire bullets. Thus the police cannot use ballistics to match a shot fired from a laser. However, there is a theory going round that each laser has a specific firing frequency and that could be tracked. So far, no one has been prosecuted on that evidence alone (yet).
Gauss weaponry on the other hand is strictly controlled. In some very rare instances, a corporate security force may be armed with them. Gauss weapons devastate armour and there high rates of fire make them excellent room "hoses". Needless to say, a lot of streetscum want to get there hands on one.
Laser Carbines & Rifles
Advances in laser technology has finally reduced the bulky laser rifles to more powerful and compact laser carbine. More efficient lasing tubes have increased the amount of shots available from typical power packs.
Lasers make an audible "crack" noise as the laser beam super heats the air as it fires. Laser carbines are only capable of single shot fire due to cooling and power handling limitations.
The main problem with all energy weapons is the capacity of the power cell. At present lasers are limited to a small power pack if they are to be as concealable as normal projectile weapons.

* Refer to the shot capacity table below.
All lasers have a beam strength setting which may decrease the weapon's damage by a D6 or more. Thus, a F-C Asp could fire 20 shots of 3D6 (as the pack holds 60 charges) or could fire 60 weak shots of a D6.
Laser Rifles
These are more powerful than the pistols as they have better lasing crystals and cooling system. Rifles are forbidden to most civillians. Laser rifles are capable of single shots, burst or sustained fire.
Lasers are popular space weapons because they have no recoil nor do the missed shots go into orbit (like bullets). Geospace Industries, GSI, have invested heavily laser technology.

Power Pack Capacities
A power pack is said to hold x number of damage dice. A basic pack holds 60 charges which breaks down as 20 lots of 3D6 or 15 lots of 4D6.

Gauss Carbines & Rifles
Gauss weapons use a magnetic accelerator which flings the needle out at an incredible velocity. They have significantly longer barrels than other weapons. A guass weapon makes as least as much noise as a rifle but there is no muzzle flash. These guns also produce a large magnetic pulse when firing, sensitive equipment can pick this up.
Guass weapon magazines contain a power pack for the linear accelerator and an ammo bin containing the needles. It is not possible to recycle these magazines due to the sensitive components contained.
These guns can be suppressed, but the suppression is not as good an autoweapon suppressor. These guns have fairly low recoil as they fire small needles which are similar to bolter flechettes, except much finer.
The smallest gauss carbine is at least the size of a big SMG, while the guass rifles are long barrelled and lethal. Both carbines and rifles are strictly controlled by the law, in fact rifles are often limited to military ownership (class four).
