VNC Distributions

RealVNC
The original developers.

TightVNC
Const Kaplinsky's project to improve VNC's compression between server and viewer

UltraVNC
A project to add in file transfer, chat messaging and NTLM authentication to VNC.

HiddenVNC
VNC without the tray icon, but all of the functionality.

Helpful VNC sites

VNCPush
A wscript/jscript program that installs VNC remotely.

VNC FAQomatic
This is a web site dedicated to the most commonly asked questions about VNC. Always a good idea to check here first before asking the mailing list. The best thing about it is that you can add updates if you find out something useful.

VNC Mailing List
Can't find what you want under Google or the FAQ? Search the mailing list as chances are somebody has already asked your question

SysWorkSoft.net
This site has a gaggle of quality VNC tools. I strongly recommend the use of VncPwd which allows administrators to change remote computer VNC passwords.

VNCscan
There are lots of GUI tools out there for managing your VNC connections and VNCscan is one of the best.

VNC Uncrash
A helpful little program from Charles Boling that checks to see if your WinVNC program has died. You can download his program and the source from his web site.

Off topic, but very useful

OpenSSH for Windows
This is a free SSH server for Windows. It uses some of the Cygwin packages, but you don't need to be a *nix guru to use these. The installer is a doddle to use and it allows you to have encrypted FTP and SSH sessions to your Windows box. You can even browse your host using Putty and the WinSCP program. Quality stuff.

SS64.com
This is an excellent reference site on scripting. There's a very comprehensive list of Windows command line tools and some scripting advice too. Well worth checking out.

JoeWare
Lots of C++ command line tools to do things in Active Directory and Windows that MS overlooked. The CPUA tool is everything RunAs should have been. Joe's programs are freeware.

SysInternals
A fine collection of very powerful command line tools for Windows and the majority of them are freeware! I strongly suggest you check out RegMon as it's very useful for tracking down software install problems.

NBTscan
To paraphrase the developer's web site, this program scans IP networks for NETBIOS name information. You can use this free tool to scan across routers where ICMP has bene disabled (aka no PINGing).

GenControl
This is a nice twist on the usual VNC installers. GenControl requires admin rights on the target machine and it can push VNC on to the remote machine via the domain.
